Alpha Wolves

The parts of Vegas I could remember, I had made terrible decisions—gambling and partying to dysfunction. Why? I had blacked out twice and woken up two different days with two different guys in my bed. It was like I was making up for all those years I ran track instead of acting like a rebellious teenager. What was I doing? Trying to fit in? The best Kava techies could handle the drink, the wager, and the work. I couldn’t keep up. And I’d racked up an absurd amount of debt, when the only thing I was supposed to be doing was saving. I apologized to my tampon box on the mantle. I promised it I’d do better, that I’d earn it all back.

While I came back from Vegas, hungover, confused, and further in debt, Kava Tech’s leadership came back and announced they had successfully filed to take the company public. Employees could buy stock options.

“Another gamble?” I asked, when I saw the email.

“No. This is a sure thing. The market is raging. The stock price will go through the roof,” Jeremy said.

“When can we sell the shares?”

“Who cares? A year, a year and a half? No insider trading,” he said.

“That’s a long time.”

“Not really. I’m going to hold this baby for a while. Cash out big in the long run. I’m ponying up at least five. Maybe more if I want to cut my family in.”

That night, I called the one person I knew who had spare cash and loved inside information. I pitched the idea as a strategic alliance and deal of a lifetime.

Sky was excited. “For real? Are you kidding? A red-hot tech IPO? I’m totally in.”

“There’s nothing to lose. I’ll pay you back with interest when we sell,” I told her, praying this would fix my mistakes.

“How much are you thinking?” she asked.

“Five thousand? Total initial investment between the two of us with you covering my $2,500, just for now, until I can pay you back.”

“I’ll mail you a check.”

“You won’t regret it.”

I wanted to cry to Sky about the mess of everything I’d made so far, but I didn’t want to scare her out of investing. Instead, I told her about jumping out of a plane and everything I was learning. And I listened to what her life was like in Italy. There were cafes, museums, and men named Marco who pined for her, and of course side trips for couture shopping in Milan. I thought, if I could fix my mistakes, on my way to Rodrigues, I’d fly through Rome and see her. Maybe I could be the one doing the expensive shopping and lending her a dress.

At work, I swore off the distractions, specifically the men in my life, minus the one I had to work with every day.

“We can’t call our hiring strategy ‘The Lemming’.” I was resolute.

“Why not? It’s perfect.” Jeremy held his ground. “When the best kids come all the others will follow, like lemmings off a cliff.”

“It’s offensive.”

“To who?”

“Our candidates? The lemmings? They don’t even do that cliff suicide thing.
